Domaine de Jouanda - Maison

“Potius esse quam videri”

It's better to be than to appear.

The Poyferré motto

Location

Nestled in the commune of Arthez d'Armagnac, on the border of the Landes and Gers departments, the Domaine de Jouanda is a green setting in the famous Grands Crus region of Bas Armagnac. Here, the richness of the soil combines with the passion of a family rooted for five centuries to offer Armagnacs of unparalleled quality. The vines bathed in sun extend over a terroir of tawny and clay-siliceous sand, which gives our Armagnac subtle and deep aromas. Come visit this place where history, culture and vines mingle in perfect harmony.

Our history

1570

An ancestor of the Poyferré became private secretary to Jeanne d'Albret, the mother of Henri IV, King of France, and was knighted for his services. This distinction marks the family's first links with the French nobility and the Gascony region.

1815

The Poyferré family was elevated to the rank of baron by King Louis XVIII, a recognition of their status and influence in the society of the time, consolidating their noble heritage and their link with the land.

1879

Acquisition of the Domaine de Jouanda, located in Arthez d'Armagnac, by the Poyferré family. This purchase marks the beginning of their adventure in Armagnac production and demonstrates their commitment to viticulture and distillation.

20th century

During this century, the estate consolidated its reputation by producing high quality Armagnacs. The family continues to honor and perfect traditional methods of distilling and aging, while incorporating new techniques to improve quality.

21st century

Domaine de Jouanda is today recognized for its excellence and its Armagnac is served in the greatest restaurants and hotels in France. The Poyferré family, faithful to its heritage, continues to produce vintage Armagnacs, respecting a tradition that has been perpetuated for five centuries.

"Domaine de Jouanda is one of the best producers in Bas-Armagnac and remains a family business. The Poyferré family (who also owned Château Léoville Poyferré in Saint-Julien in Médoc) has a history in the region dating back to five centuries."
